1. General information
The objectives of the subject are the following:
- Knowing how to identify the patient's and family's reason for consultation, as well as how to communicate effectively and clearly.
- Obtain sufficient knowledge to diagnose and propose a treatment plan and a preventive plan in paediatric dentistry.
- Be able to educate and motivate patients on prevention.
- Know the basic techniques in paediatric dentistry treatments.
- Acquire the necessary manual skills to be developed in the clinic the following year.
- Practice in the preclinical laboratory the techniques of diagnosis, prevention and different treatments.
- Possess a trusting and collaborative relationship with peers and faculty.
- Show a favourable attitude and training for teamwork.
- Maintain a critical attitude towards new medical information.
- Understand the importance of paediatric dentistry dental care.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following results:
- Apply the principles of child psychobiology necessary to obtain the patient's cooperation in dental treatment.
- Interpret aspects of the child's general development in order to diagnose normality or abnormality in relation to the child's oral health.
- Evaluate by clinical examination and complementary tests the signs of dental pathology.
- Establish a differential diagnosis, as well as a treatment plan indicated for each patient.
- Apply the knowledge of the other subjects, to make an integral diagnosis of the child, prioritizing their needs and planning the treatment sequence.
- Develop the necessary skills to perform the indicated treatment.

4. Academic activities
The teaching-learning methodology in this subject is based fundamentally on classroom activities of a theoretical-practical nature and includes:
- Lectures, which aim to introduce students to the most relevant topics of the subject. During the presentation, we will encourage dialogue through questions, problem-based learning, resolution of doubts, etc.
- Study and analysis of clinical cases, which will allow the student to become familiar with the critical analysis of the patient and reasoned decision making.
- Pre-clinical practices, with the objective of providing students with minimum skills and abilities.
- Clinical practice, to recognize the particular characteristics of oral and dental treatment in the paediatric patient and to learn the basic aspects of the management of the child in the dental office, establishing effective communication with the patient and their parents or guardians to advise the necessary care and follow-up.
- Group work, to reinforce collaboration and teamwork.
- Tutorials, dedicated to solving doubts and providing bibliography, as well as following up on group work.
5. Assessment system
The evaluation is a process of uninterrupted assessment during the entire learning period in which the following sections will be evaluated in the following percentages:
1. -Active participation of the student by solving problems or cases raised in class (10%).
2. -Written theoretical exams (30%): Multiple choice questions (40 total with five options with only one correct answer and 4 reserve questions). To pass the test a minimum of 28 questions must be answered correctly. Wrong answers do not subtract points, blank answers neither add nor subtract points.
3. -Group work (20%): Evaluation of the preparation and presentation of the group work.
4. -Practical part (40%): Evaluation of the preclinical and clinical practical activities performed, as well as the practical notebook.
-Attendance to the practices is compulsory; those students who accumulate more than three unexcused absences must take a final practical exam
In order to pass the subject it is essential to pass sections 2, 3 and 4 separately.
The numerical grade will be expressed in accordance with the provisions of art. 5.2 of Royal Decree 1125/2003 of September 5 (BOE September 18). Thus, the grades will be established in the following range: - From 0 to 4.9: Fail (S); 5.0 to 6.9: Pass (A); from 7.0 to 8.9: Notable (N); from 9.0 to 10: Outstanding (SB). The “Honours” may be awarded to students who have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.0.
